Our History

Capel St. Mary & Little Wenham Bowls Club was formed during the 1970's and we played our first league matches in 1980. Since then we have enjoyed many happy seasons of bowling, and have gained many honours over the years. Since our formation members have worked hard on developing our facilities (with generous support from the Capel St. Mary Parish Council) including a complete refurbishment of the club house (now referred to as the ‘Bowls Pavilion'), the provision of changing pavilions, bowls green maintenance equipment, the installation of an automatic watering system and the construction of new perimeter fencing. All work is undertaken on a voluntary basis by club members and our facilities and bowls green attract many complimentary comments.

Our Philosophy

We are an active and friendly club with outdoor Bowling to suit all ages - our members are drawn from a wide range of ages and we cater for all tastes, whether competitive or social/friendly bowling. We believe that bowling should be a sociable and fun experience, and we have a good social programme to reinforce this philosophy. Whilst we welcome people of all ages we are especially interested in attracting younger members as they are our future. Our membership currently stands at 40.

Our Programme

Our season starts at the beginning of May, with some earlier club fixtures and in summary our club will -

  • Enter six teams in the three Ipswich & District and Samford Leagues - playing under the English Bowling Federation code
  • Enter League and County Cup competitions
  • Stage various Club Social Events, Competitions and Sponsored tournaments
  • Organise Men's, Ladies and Mixed competitions for Club Championship Trophies

Quite a programme for a small village club over the short outdoor season! Further information can be found on this website.

President Pat Scott

Chairman Jim Ross

Secretary Les Bryant
